3 Varicose Vein Treatments to Consider Before the End of the Year

You’ve joined the large group of people who have varicose veins — they affect about 30% of the general population — but this is one club you’d rather not be a part of.
That’s exactly where the team at Soffer Health Institute can help. As a leading vascular specialist, Dr. Ariel Soffer offers the most effective varicose vein treatments available today, and we review them here.
So, if you want to hit the reset button on your legs by clearing away unsightly and uncomfortable varicose veins, here’s how.
1. Sclerotherapy with Varithena®
First up in our varicose vein treatment arsenal is sclerotherapy, which is an effective and minimally invasive approach for average-sized varicose veins (varicose veins are typically between 3 and 5 millimeters in diameter).
The sclerotherapy we offer is called Varithena, which is a foam that we inject into the diseased vein. This foam causes your varicose vein to collapse, at which point your body naturally reabsorbs the remnants of the vein and reroutes your blood to healthier vessels nearby.
Most patients require only one or two needle sticks during a Varithena treatment, although some patients may require more than one treatment, depending on the size and number of varicose veins.
Your results will take shape over the weeks following your leg vein treatment, and, during this time, you can help by wearing compression stockings to promote good circulation in your lower legs.
2. Endovenous ablation for varicose veins
Another minimally invasive approach for average-sized varicose veins is through endovenous ablation. With this technique, we direct laser or radiofrequency (RF) energy into your varicose vein to destroy the blood vessel. As with sclerotherapy, your blood will shift over to other vessels, so your circulation won’t be affected.
Endovenous ablation treatments are quick — we deliver the laser or RF energy in short bursts that make quick work of your varicose vein(s).
After your endovenous ablation treatment, we recommend that you wear compression stockings for a few weeks to facilitate results.
3. Surgical removal of large varicose veins
If your varicose veins are on the larger size — 5 millimeters or more — the above minimally invasive treatments might not work as well. In these cases, we turn to surgical removal, though we perform this procedure on an outpatient basis and, most of the time, without using general anesthesia.
Once we administer a local anesthetic, Dr. Soffer makes a small incision through which he can access and remove the diseased portion of the vein.
Once we remove the vein and close the access point, you’re free to go home, and we’ll provide you with aftercare instructions for the small surgical site.
To figure out which varicose veins treatment is best for your circumstances and goals, we invite you to come in for a vein evaluation. To set that up, simply contact one of our offices in Weston or Hollywood, Florida, to schedule an appointment.
